Classic rock
Smeshenie “Smeshenie” 1981
Smeshenie was absolutely cult band for Moscow underground in 1980.Their “visit card” was a dynamic guitar hard rock and female voice of Olesya Troyanskaya. How I sad already,it was a hard time for music in USSR and like a lot of great classic bands,Smeshenie reformed in 1981,gives in their hystory only 10 concerts.in 1981.Band change the singer and calls Rula but songs remains the same.Rula plays in Petrazovodsk before 1983…After long pause,Olesya begins sing again in 90’s but dies in 1995.
About this band everybody talks like about legend who have not a records…
AND NOW,TODAY,FIRST TIME IN THE WEB IN THIS FORMAT,WE PRESENT REMASTERED RECORD OF ORIGINAL SMESHENIE(as a Rula).
We don’t cut from the record pauses or some strange pieces, leave all how it was,for you better feeling the atmosphere on a repetition of great russian rock band in 1980.
Thanks to all people who save this record and who help made this post.
Special thanks to Vladimir Marochkin for EXCLUSIVE(!) photo from his archives.

Horizont “Summer in town” 1985

This unique album have a many different reviews on english on “Progarchives”,you can read it here

The RUSSIAN NUGGETS vol.1 – 20 underground artyfacts from golden era.

Despite the iron curtain, in 1965 Beatlemania already reached Russia, and thousands of young people across the country started making their own guitars and trying to learn how to play Beatles and Rolling Stones songs. At first Russian lyrics were combined with western tunes, which sometimes turned out to be rather interesting. Later musicians started to write their own music.
Despite the total censorship and impossibility to release albums, rock bands played across the USSR as early as in 1970 – people needed to rest and to dance, so guitar ensembles were essential.
The bands were supposed to perform dance songs, but often they sounded rough and loud, producing a real garage sound.
New trends reached Russia slowly, and there were big problems with equipment, so, e.g., in 1977 in Saratov or Novgorod one could find a band playing with a 1967 Texas sound.
Unlike the other world, where musical history is valued and hundreds of compilations, such as Nuggets,Peace love and poetry,Back from the grave,Simla beat etc. are produced, no one has ever produced compilations of Russian and Ukranian bands.
Most people do not even know that such recording can exist, and the bands are long ago forgotten. Specially for this recourse I have made the FIRST compilation of such songs, RUSSIAN NUGGETS.

Gunnar Graps and the Magnetic band “Roses for dad” 1982

Gunnar Graps (Gunnar Grafs) (27 November 1951 Tartu, Estonia – 17 May 2004 Tallinn, Estonia) was a popular Estonian musician and one of the pioneers of hard rock in Estonia and Soviet Union. He has sold hundreds of thousands of records all over the world and in 2004 Graps was given a lifetime award at Estonian Music Awards. He has been compared to Mick Jagger and Alice Cooper, both who were his own personal idols, and is often called Raudmees (Iron man).
Graps was turned to music by his father at the age of six when he started to learn cello. In 1964, being 14, he joined his first band Satelliidid as a guitarist. In spring of 1967 Graps joined Mikronid, where he played drums for the next six years. In 1970-1972 he was in the army and during that period he performed with Ivo Linna. He spent another year behind the drums in Mikronid after his return from military service. In spring 1968 Jüri Lina recorded about ten Mikrokonid songs which also included Graps’ creation for his show “Pobifo Revüü”.
After leaving the group “Mikronid” Graps created Ornament in 1973, which was one of the pioneers of hard rock in Estonia and the Soviet Union (Estonia was occupied by the USSR at the time). Ornament’s music was influenced by Led Zeppelin and psychedelic rock. In 1976 Graps put together a new outfit called Magnetic Band which was Jazz-rock oriented, with reggae and funk-soul influences. In 1977 Graps graduated from Tallinn music school, from the percussion instruments departament. Soon after that he reformed his group and they started leaning towards hard rock. Soon Magnetic Band became one of the most popular heavy-music bands in Soviet Union. They won the first prize in the first official rock-festival of Soviet Union which took place in Tbilisi thanks to their hit “Lady Blues” and became the stars of “Yerevan-81″ international pop-rock-festival. “Garbed in fire engine-red pants and white shirt decorated with a splashy 7-Up emblem, Graps sang: “Since we have nowhere else to make love/we do it out in the open/And sometimes the rain washes away the makeup/from her face—and mine”, wrote “Time” magazine in 1981
In the eighties his popularity peaked. “Magnetic Band” constantly toured the Soviet Union. In 1982, Washington Post dedicated a whole page to Gunnar Graps and the Magnetic Band.[2] It was no surprise that in 1983 “Magnetic Band” got banned by the Soviet authorities, which led to creation of GGG (Gunnar Graps Group)

Ariel’ “Ariel’-1″ 1968 + 8 bonus tracks 1968-73

Ariel’ in sixties was a strong garage beat band in Cheliabinsk. In this format band plays before 1970.In 70 half of band with a new musicians from the band Allegro formed a new ensemble and takes old name. This ensemble plays folk-pop,recording many LP’s and still popular today… it was already another band, but in first years they make some good non-album prog numbers,I’m add this songs of new Ariel’ in bonus tracks.
Arsenal “Arsenal” 1979 (+2 Bonus tracks)

First LP album of Arsenal. Was re-edit on CD with 2 bonus tracks under the name “Opasnaya igra”.What can I say else?Forever jazz-rock classic.
Taifun “Live and rare tapes”

The band was formed in 1970 in the town Kadievka and was very popular, but existed as an independend ensemble in constant conflict with the law. The musicians were persecuted and once even had their hair cut forcibly after a concert.
In 1974 the band temporarily changed its name to “Plamya” (”Flame”), (not to be confused with the official band of those times).
The band broke up when its leader was arrested for… the purchase of a videocassette recorder. Almost all the band’s archives were destroyed at that moment.
This is a compilation of the best remaining recordings by Taifun and Plamya.
Akvareli “Sunshine in my heart” 1979

A good example how the official soviet pop-band can performance popular west songs in 70’s.On this EP have the hits of Uriah Heep,Steve Wonder,Demis Roussos…and it’s not 100% “blind” copies from originals.
Feniks “Live” 1983

The most massive purges against rock music in the USSR began in 1982, and practically none of the real rock bands in our country have survived them.
The pop-ensemble called “Arax” was officially forbidden, but two musicians illegally tried to revive it under the name “Feniks”(”Phoenix”). Having played for two years, this band was also forced to split due to the constant pressure from the authorities. Feniks successfully combined popular Russian-language songs with art-rock structures and serious instrument mastering.
Visokosnoye Leto “Lavka chudes” 1972-79

Visokosnoye Leto (Leap Year Summer) was founded by Moscow singer/guitarist Alexander Sitkovetsky and keyboardist Chris Kelmi in 1972.
Their shows consisted of three parts: an art-rock song program (40 minutes), opera “Enchained Prometeus” (45 minutes), and rock’n’roll songs (30 minutes).
The band split up in 1979. The former band members formed a new line-up for Mashina Vremeni and the bands Rock-Atelie and Autograph.
The compilation album CD “Lavka Chudes” (Shop of wonders) was recorded around 1978 in a studio booth in the Moscow Institute of Theatrical Arts, where the first tape albums of Mashina Vremeni and Voskresenie were recorded later. Because of the split-up, which occurred shortly after the recording, the album was officially released only in 1996, at the initiative of former band member Alexander Kutikov.
Track list:
1. Uvertura (Overture)
2. Pochititel’ Snov (Dream thief)
3. Lavka Chudes (Shop of wonders)
4. Mona Lisa
5. Rondo vne Tonalnosti (Rondo out of tune)
6. Zerkala (Mirrors)
7. Pesnya o Buntare (Song about a rebel)
8. Paradox
9. Mir Derevyev (World of trees)
10. Sataninskiye pliaski (Satanic dancing)
Ruja “Ruja” 1982 (Estonia)

A very melodic album of estonian band.Don’t look to the date of release – like a lot of early 80’s soviet records, this album made in a classical 70’s rock style.
Rossiyane “The best”
Rossiyane sounds similar to Blue Cheer,Budgie and others. They are the roots of russian stoner rock
. I made this compilation from my favorite songs and I am glad to show this facsinating band to the world.
